What to check before buying a webcam
Check image quality, connection and privacy features before upgrading your video-call camera.
Match the camera to your real use
A webcam used for meetings needs dependable autofocus and reasonable low-light performance. A camera for a stationary recording setup may be fine with fixed focus if you sit at a consistent distance.
Resolution is not everything
A 4K label does not guarantee a clear picture. Exposure, compression and room lighting influence the result. Check whether a claimed frame rate applies at the full advertised resolution or only at lower settings.
Check compatibility and placement
Review the connection type, operating-system support and mounting hardware. If you use an external monitor, make sure the clamp fits the monitor without covering any important part of the display.
Consider everyday privacy
A built-in privacy shutter can be convenient; otherwise you can unplug the camera when unused. Check whether microphone and camera permissions are easily controlled in your operating system.
