Choosing a desk light for video and photo work
Understand light size, positioning and the controls that matter for a small creator setup.
Softness and placement
A large diffused light close to your subject often looks softer than a small bright light at the same distance. Position it slightly off-axis and test with the actual room light turned on.
Brightness controls
Look for adjustable output and a stable stand or clamp. A lamp marketed as daylight balanced may still differ from other lights; matching every light in a scene is often more important than its advertised color temperature.
Avoid unnecessary purchases
Try using daylight from a window, a white wall or a reflector before buying multiple lights. For screen recordings, glare control may be more important than raw brightness.
Before you order
Check mains voltage or USB power requirements, mount type, cable length, dimmer behavior, flicker reports and return policy. Specs rarely tell the whole story about light quality.
