How to choose a portable SSD for video files
Compare capacity, connector speed and backups when choosing external storage for creative projects.
Plan capacity from your actual files
Check the size of a typical project folder and how many projects you keep at once. Video source clips, exports, caches and backups can add up much faster than finished video files alone.
Fast drives need fast connections
A fast SSD can be limited by a slower laptop USB port or cable. Compare both ends of the connection and the supported USB generation; the shape of a USB-C plug does not reveal its transfer speed.
Understand durability
A solid-state drive has no spinning disk, but it can still fail or be damaged. Water resistance or shock protection should be checked against stated ratings and warranty terms.
Keep more than one copy
An external SSD is useful for portable projects but is not a complete backup strategy. Keep important files in at least one additional independent location and verify that you can restore them.
