How to choose a USB-C hub for a laptop
Ports, display support, power delivery and the questions to check before adding a USB-C hub.
A USB-C port does not guarantee video output
Some USB-C ports only transfer data or charge a laptop. Check your exact laptop model for DisplayPort Alt Mode or Thunderbolt support before expecting HDMI on a hub to work.
Plan your ports
List the connections you actually use: HDMI, USB-A, Ethernet, SD card and power input. A hub can share the bandwidth of one laptop port across several devices, so heavy transfers and displays may compete.
Understand pass-through charging
A hub advertising 100 W power input may deliver less power to the laptop because the hub uses some itself. Compare the power the laptop needs with the hub’s stated output, not just its input rating.
Before you order
Check supported resolutions and refresh rates, operating-system compatibility, maximum power delivery, cable length and whether a separate charger is required. Use the manufacturer’s laptop support page to verify port capabilities.
